A major engine builder for dirt track racing engines(high power 800hp stuff, not street stocks) says that he can tell when an engine comes in for a rebuild due to the increased cylinder bore wear. He reccommends the WIX paper filters. You can see the difference yourself on these applications by the buildup of dirt and grime in the throttle body of the carb on a K&N equipped race engine.
As an interesting side note, the same engine builder ran a chassis dyno test on some cars after a 100 lap dirt track race...said the K&N cars were down 50HP compared to paper filters due to the amount of dust and dirt that were attracted to the oil on the filter. Tests run with clean filters showed no HP loss for a new paper filter versus a clean K&N.
So yep, when they're clean, a K&N(or similar) filter will give ya an extra pony or two over time as long as you are meticulous on your maintanance...but it may not be worth it in the long run.
