Imagine if we had been buying prime rated mortgages right along? None of this fancy derivatives, and even the Dems would've been scared to monkey with the credit standards too much of the trust fund. Just good, solid single family, small multi-family owner occupied rentals (three to six apartments say), and small commercial properties. Income streams for the next 15, 20, 30 years sure match up with pension needs nicely.
If we were going to over-tax ourselves on SS of the last 25 years, we could've at least actually invested it in ourselves.
