The real reason it wasn't an issue here is that it was a very small problem to begin with... Our banking industry has been heavily consolidated in the last 10-15 years. When you get to the point where 5 major chartered banks control the vast majority of banking business with credit unions bringing up the last few crumbs, and said 5 major banks do most of the lending, and all 5 have the same tight, stingy policies towards lending, and no competition to run them into risky business... you avoid most of the mess entirely. The canadian banking system doesn't have the thousands of smaller banks as found in the US... With perhaps one notable exception, the banks here have kept turning out their billion per quarter profit.
