A come-a-long is nice but is totally useless if you have nothing to hang it from. The cable type come-a-longs are junk in my opinion. The chain ones are much safer and easier to use. A chain hoist is better than a cable come-a-long but still needs a good mount to hang it from. It's not a good idea to experiment with how strong the trusses in your garage are. A bought a folding engine crane to pull the engine and tranny out of my Cat. It wasn't a real heavy duty one but worked just fine to pick up 1700 lbs. and could have lifted more with the beam all the way in. I got it on sale for $120. I regularly see them from $160 to around $220 for a heavier built one. Much safer and better control than using a loader or something else that isn't really designed for lifting engines and stuff.
