They can do it because they build only a few models; do the same thing day after day so the builders can pretty much build it without plans; and for this reason can prevent waste. These houses are put together where room sizes; roof lines; ect; match the lumber.
Where the price rise comes in for self drawn houses is when you start adding odd shapes and the fact the builders have to read your plans to get it just like you want it.
