I have friends who farm wheat in the hills of eastern Washington- I worked for them one harvest about 10 years ago, and conversation turned to helping a farmer in the community who was ill or injured. My host said in his 70 years, he he had never seen a community member's grain go unharvested in that situation, and had never heard of anyone turning down a request to help. More commonly in that area, someone would simply coordinate the neighbors on all sides to harvest the person's fields adjacent to their farms. Easier to organize than a one day "dozens of combines, hundreds of trucks" operation. Local elevator would allow the trucks hauling for that operation to go to the front of the line to offload. Also not uncommon for neighbors to lend their "backup" combine to one who had experienced a "season-ending" breakdown on his, or take their own machines in to finish him up when they had finished their own.
