I had a buddy who would start his flathead Ford V-8 power unit with a 1 cyl gas engine that had a gear reduction on it. The reduction helped with torque and also rotated in the proper direction. I forget just how he disengaged that business, but that was the critical moment in the procedure.

You probably could do it with a PTO arrangement with enough hassling. It sounds kind of dangerous and you would probably want some sort of over-runing clutch involved.

Fixing the carb would seem to be a lot safer and cheaper. You could probably upgrade the ignition too for a lot less than the other alternative.
