You can come up all sorts of ideas...but consider this:
You want an engine that makes it power at lower RPMs. Most any engine can be altered with a different cam to make low end power. But a starting place is a long stroke engine. Diesels are great, but probably pricey. A common engine that I would consider is the Ford 300 six or an old Chevy 292 six. The Dodge 225 slant six is tough as nails...but not the power maker the other two, are. But any of these are way beyond the original 4 cylinder. Personally, I wouldn"t waste my time or money. But, if you have plenty of both, recam one of the big sixes for low end torque and go for it.
