Depending on axle gearing, some get 14 MPG empty on highway trips and some get 20 MPG.
I've got two neighbors with 1 ton, single wheel, two-door Duramax 4WD trucks. One is a 2003 and the other 2005. Both have Allisons. Both constantly complain and both say they they've never gotten better than 16 MPG. It's kind of funny since both kept their old diesel "rust bucket" trucks and use them now for around town stuff and light work. One guy still has his 93 Dodge with a 5 speed manual that he says always gets 20-21 MPG on the highway. The other guy is still driving his 1982 Chevy with a 6.2 and four-speed manual.
By the way, the newest Duramax was recently tested - dual wheels and four doors and it got a best of 18 MPG. Not sure what axles it had but I know it was set up for heavy towing.
