I've been driving old BMW 3-series cars for commuting for many years. I always wanted an all wheel drive model, but the iX models are hard to come by and the xi models are way out of my price range.
Here's my list and the ODO reading when I junked them out and cause of death:
1984 318i - 301K (transmisison)
1984 325e - 310K (rear end)
1988 325e - unknown, at least 300K (all rubber bushings in front suspension wore out)
1992 318i - 240K (still going)
I've never had one spec of engine troubles with any of them. A fuel pump here and some new brakes there is about it.
My friends all give me crap about being an elitist snob for driving German cars, but I spend a lot less then they do in the long run. Plus they're pretty fun to drive and get good mileage.
