I usually don"t get involved in these discussions but this whole idea that it is your choice if you are rich or poor, end of discussion and no insight into it, is one of the problems with this country today. Yes it mostly your choice if you want to work or not or save or not or be a leach on society and collect welfare. But what about the 1000"s of people out there like my mother who have worked hard all their lives and tried to save money and make the right choices and who are now living on $1500 or less a month? What about all the people who have worked for a company for 20 or more years who thought that they would have a secure retirement only to have the company go bankrupt and find out they have no retirement funds because they re-investing in the company to try and save the company and it didn"t work? What about the widowed woman who"s husband worked for a factory for 20 plus years and his retirement benefits ended with his death. I can go on and on with real life examples of people I know in my area who are in these types of situations. These are hard working individuals who have made contributions to society and are feeling the squeeze of high gas, high insurance and high medical bills. They made what they thought were the right choices along lifes path and now are finding out that they may not have been. That is the problem that the decision you make today may not be the best for tomorrow or 20 years from tomorrow but yet the right wing conservatives continue to ignore people like the ones I have mentioned above who have worked hard and contributed to society and yet get told that they made the wrong decisions and it isn"t their problem. The rich get richer and the hard working not quite so rich who more than likeley helped the rich, get poorer. Something needs to change.
