For nigh on to 30 years, we always had a big dove hunt on opening day............around the 1st of September. In later years, I planted sunflowers to hunt over, but we mostly hunted over the (cut) silage fields. Would always leave a few rows or stalks around the edge of the field to serve as blinds. It was as much social event as hunt. Would always have several more.........lesser........hunts. There'd always come a time when I'd be sitting there and the wind would rustle the corn and even though it might be 90 degrees, I'd realize that the Summer humidity was gone and the air was dry and I'd get a shiver up my back knowing the year was winding down and Winter was on the way and I had lived another year...........
