I agree with the previous replies. Spybot and Anti-Virus are the first things to check.
AFTER that, go to "START -> Windows Update" and get all the patches for your operating system. It may take a while, but it really is worth it in the long run. Many of the patches are to fix glitches that Microsoft has found to protect your PC from "malware."
Finally, once you've got all that done, get a registry cleaning program. The one I use is located at http://www.registrycleaner.com A lot of old baggage can start collecting in your registry, and dumping all that old stuff can really speed up your system.
