I am 39 now. When I was a punk 16-22 year old I did heavy lifting also, In fact I worked out like an animal. The best thing that I did for back pain was grab a chinning bar or rafter in the garage and let my body weight pull my spine and back muscles true. This works very well, I still do this and I started working out again, no heavy lifting though. I stopped working out for about 13-15 years. While hanging from a bar or rafter swing your legs around to stretch the back muscles. Also doing back exercises helps out greatly, Chinups-lat bar pull downs, twisting motions, bent over dumbell rows. Having strong back muscles is a good way to prevent injury.
