Mine is a 1948 SA and it doesnt have the sleeve on it.
I replaced the seal last year. I always put greese on the seal where it slides easy. Sometimes I will stick a piece of pvc pipe into the seal before sticking it on the shafts if I have trouble with the rubber ring catching and curling.
