On most gas engines when the number one cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke the distributor can be removed and rotated to any position that the gears will mesh and reinstalled and it will run as long as the number one wire is reoriented to match the relocated rotor button and the firing order is observed. This does not apply to distributors that do not have a gear on the drive end.
