I've got a couple of Monitor Tops and they still work - so I've never has to find gas or convert.
The Methly Chrolide gas is still used commercially and is available for commercial use only. It also used to be used in making leaded gasoline. Also known as - Monochloromethane, Methyl chloride, Artic, Freon 40, R 40, UN 1063, R10, R40, or R48/20
As far as the Sufur Dioxide does - it's still a common gas but not sold for refrigeration. It was known as R23 or R24.
There are some replacement gasses available - but all require a lot of work to install - e.g. changing the oil, the drier, etc.
Both the old gasses are toxic to a degree - but what isn't?
