I bought a new 2004 honda rancher, it did the same thing right from the start, dealer couldn't find the problem. It had less than 300 miles when I got watered off one day and parked it in the woods for the next 2 years. Another dealer told me to remove the angle senser and if it said mexico on it could be fixed for nothing. The angle senser is on the right side of the electric shifting motor, not very big and has two wires, easy to remove and put back on. You might try that.
