The WC's had a disconnect collar in a Mechanical Lift gear box located behind the transmission that disconnected the rear end from the clutch shaft so that the mechanical lift could be used on an implement such as cultivator when the tractor was stopped. Could this be what you are you are describing rather than a step down gear box? You might try posting this question on the Allis. Forum where the Allis guys hang out. I haven't owned a WC for about 20 years or so and my memory is not too good but I had a 40's model WC with the mechanical lift years ago. Tom R.
