Advantage of Overhead Valves vs Flatheads

My grade 12 shop teacher told me the answer to this almost 40 years ago and I forget the answer. Why is an overhead valve configuration on an engine better than a flathead design? When I listen to the 4 cylinder flatheads on my old Masseys I cannot imagine how anything could run better, but there is obviously a reason why they went the way of the dinosaur. Also, are those engines (flatheads) still used on new Lincoln welders?
