If you look at design changes in almost anything, you find money involved. The first Ford/Ferguson tractor where the engine served as the frame was considered a big idea because it was cheaper to make them that way. No extra parts. In general, if something worked they kept building it. If something kept breaking, they changed it because they had to make warranty pay outs. If something was cheaper and worked they changed to that.
