In answer to the rotation question, yes, the distributor rotates clockwise, so turning it to the left will advance the timing. As everyone else said, be sure you use a timing light and disconnect the connector to get an accurate setting. You can get by with about 2 degrees advance, if you feel you need to (e.g. very high mileage motor), but most of the time, the TDC setting is the best. Good Luck and God Bless.
