Like most responses "yeah if it's gonna heat". Salt extracts the moisture and prevents mold. It's not necessary on dry hay since a free choice salt block is a better solution.
A 50lb bag of salt is pretty cheap barn insurance. I've heard of many barns burning down from heating hay.
We've never had any rust problems on floor nails after doing this for 30 some years on a 100+ year old barn. We just stack bales narrow side down and sprinkle handfuls of salt on each row before laying down the next. When feeding the hay out, I almost never see any salt left undissolved.
