Convert 6 volt to 12 volts...

Was wondering whats involved in changing a tractor from 6v to 12v? Here is my thoughts on it, change battery,replace generator with 12v alternator,intall a resistor in series with the ign coil(what should be the resistance of the resistor be?)this will bring the voltage on the coil down to 6v,I gess the starter will take 12v and it will turn over much faster is the 10 and 5 degree weather..The voltage regulator will have to be replaced with what? Also what about the ammeter which is series with the charging ckt.can I still use the original ammeter? Any advice would be appreciated...
