Rod,It depends on the impedence of the meter you are using to check it. It will probably be between 10 & 12 volts. That won't tell you much more than whether it has an open or not. Remove the wire going to the points, then take a jumper wire & quickly short (& then remove) the non powered side of the coil to ground while holding the coil wire about 3/16" from the block, if the coil is ok it should spark. If you have a 2-cyl John Deere it should have a positive ground,which means the power should go to the (-) side of the coil & the points should go to the (+) side.
