Last time a I bought small squares (for my garden) was two years ago. Both feed stores where selling them for $9/bale...same price for the 40# as the 70# at the other. There's virtually no small grain farming in New England, so it's all trucked in.
I've since found a source for slightly used but free straw that makes great mulch for me.
