Wayne, pull all the plugs, then have someone hand crank or bump the starter a very little bit at a time. Put your finger or a compression tester hose only in the plug hole. When air pushes out, put a wire in the hole, slowly rotate the engine the same direction by hand until the piston is at the top. Line up your timing mark to the proper firing point (TDC or some degrees before - whatever it is). Look at the rotor - it will be pointing to #1. If your points are properly gapped, loosen and rotate the dist and watch the points. The spark occurs at the moment the points OPEN, So put a test light on the wire on the terminal at the side of the dist. With the ignition ON, slowly rotate the dist. When points are closed, light is off(points ground), When they open, light is on. You need to tighten the dist down at the exact point where the light comes on, and your ignition should be properly timed. This applies to any machine using ignition points.Hope this is clear enough. E-mail me if you need further instruction.
