Easy fix, use the reg field contacts in low current fashion and have them simply drive a nice piece of silicon.. say a 2n3055 or a 2955.. depending on what polarity we are dealing with. Then use the transistor to power the field .
I agree though.. bad workaround fix to not rebuilding the genny correctly!
