That "someone" in the US musta been somebody with alot of influence with all the automakers at the times, since those stripes(or some similar variation of 'em) came stock from the factory on most all the US-made musclecars. Most of which would blow the doors off the average European "sports cars" of the day(check out the tests between the Pontiac and Ferrari GTO's).
Maybe whoever it was that came up with the idea of putting those on the American cars was actually making an early "in your face" statement to those Europe car companys??? Kinda like "yeah, us Americans are rookies, but yer still gonna have to eat our dust"...
