An oversimplified explanation is the ratio of the volume of gases in the combustion chamber BEFORE being squeezed down by the piston TO the volume of gases AFTER the pistion sqeezes them down. For instance if you could squeeze a gallon of air down to a half-gallon of compressed air, the compression ration would be 2:1.
