The extensions are normally used on a kitchen backsplash.They are metal and tent to sometimes cause a short if the receptacle is not taped over.Does the code require it ;yes,however common practice is the longer screws.If the siding is noncombustible its not much of an issue.Anyplace a spark can leave the box is what is the worry.Im thinking 95% of electricians would just go longer screws knowing the receptacle was tightly wired.New work would fail if the box was 3/8 back and inspected.Old work most inspectors will not call you on this.Spackle is noncombust and another fix too.If its only a couple you may as well get the extensions but tape receptacles with super 33 black tape[3M].
