Without going into my background and experience to justify this response, I have to say this: spelling is one of those "skills" that some people have and some people don't. It has nothing to do with intelligence. It's kind of like athletic ability; some people are better baseball players than others, better tennis players than others, etc., simply because their skills in these areas are naturally better.
I'm a great speller, my wife is a terrible speller but she's an RN with two Bachelors degrees and one Masters degree and is a million times smarter than I am. And I've seen similar situations many times throuhgout my life and career.
