As a new plant sprouts - it's sending energy from below ground to the top. Once it gets big enough, the part above ground starts sending nutrients down to the roots. It's at that stage that Round Up (or equivalent) works. That's why it doesn't work if sprayed on plants too early in the spring when they are short. It's also why it works best in the fall. I've been waiting for weeks for my field to get to the 7" stage to spray. Just did it yesterday. I was told that Round Up no longer holds a patent so I used a generic brand this year - "Kleenup Pro" by Loveland. Hope it works.
