Farmall Cub Rearend Noise

A buddy of mine has a Farmall Cub which he bought at a show a couple of years ago. It's a beautiful restoration and runs like a clock, BUT it has got one horrible sounding rear end. It's sort of a grinding, scraping, gnashing, rubbing (you name it, it's got it) sound from the left rear area, maybe even in the small reduction gears which drive each wheel. Fluid is up in the main differential and tranny, and also in the reduction housings so it's not low on oil. Any suggestions what it might be? Was this a common problem on the Cubs? How does a guy find out exactly where the problem lies? Your suggestions are appreciated and I'll pass them on. Thanks.
