Just to add to the good advice, check the crankcase breather tube for signs of blow-by. Also , check the intake components. My father had a dealer rebuild a tractor engine, and the mechanic pinched the rubber from the air cleaner, cracking it. About 20 hours later, in dusty conditions, and the engine was trash. A clean or new air filter, especially on a diesel, is a good sign.
