Like I said, I have no knowledge of the tractor involved. It would probably still have square cut gears (not even sure about that) and might explain how a transmission can jump into gear if it's close. A taper cut gear (right term?) tends to jump out of gear if it's only close. Lord knows I've been there with cars and trucks in the past.
