I've both bruised ribs and cracked ribs. They're both rather painful.
The last time I cracked a couple, about a year ago, our doctor said he could x-ray me but it would be pointless because sometimes cracks can't be seen on the x-rays. There's not much you can do but take pain pills and gut it out.
A couple of times I've had to sleep in a recliner for a couple weeks because it hurt too darned much to lay flat.
