John, you never said how the compression test came out?
If you can see scores or pits in the cylinder walls, it probably should be bored and fitted with new pistons. Never had any luck with oversizing the rings myself.
Have the valves gone over as well, not expensive but critical to the end result and longevity of the engine! Tell your friend thanks for everything, but move on.

Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out.
