I got into the insurance business to learn about this very thing. If you really think about what insurance has always been about, it makes it easier to understand. The insurance companies are taking specific risks, that is, they will insure your property, for a given amount of premium, for a given amount of time. Now, you realize they are out there to make money, so they encourage people to share their risk, that is known as a deductible, the higher your deductible, the lower your premium. The next thing is what will or won't be covered. Unless specified in your policy, it is not covered, period. Then you have to look at the amount of fraudulant claims that are submitted in a year. This is what causes insurance adjuster to deny a claim, if they think it is suspect. An example would be, if you back your car into your garage door, this is not what insurance is for, you made a mistake, you pay for it. Could you imagine if they would pay that claim? Imagine, your garage door gets bound up, is in need of repair, you don't want to fix it on your dime, so, you back into it, walla, the insurance company pays the bills. I guess my point is, know how insurance works, what it covers, and what you are paying for. That is the reason I am an insurance agent, so that I can make sure my customers understand what they have at risk, what their policy covers, and what I do for them.
