Tillers got a bad rep because some fellows were trying to do too much in one pass. They would go as slow as possible and absolutely powder the soil. Not good. Make a first pass to rip up the top, let any plant residue dry and get crispy, real shallow. In a week or so, come back and do what you have to do for your crop. If you get a tiller see if you can research any operating tips for it. I like my tiller but I made some spectacular mistakes with it as well. Good Luck.
