Hello Matt Kane One wire alternators need only to be exited when first put into service in order to start charging. They may need to be exided if they been out of service for a long time, but usually the start chargin right up as soon as they are spinning. If you have a bad diode in the unit it may not charge much at idle and then charge at high speed.Take a volt meter reading at the battery voltage should be between 13.8 and 14.2 with the engine running.A fully charged battery voltage is 12.6v at 80 degrees F. When charging properly alternator output is 1/3 its capacity at idle speed, so eventually it will bring battery voltage to 14v even at idle. Guido.
