I really have no preference, it just depends on what you have for it to snag on. We've destroyed more than a couple pulling into and out of the old shed, but that once is settleing really bad so each time we need to cut another inch or 2 off the extension.
Our 1855 has the hinge on the front, but the muffler is high enough it isn't gonna come back to me anyway. Same with all of our tractors but the rest have the hinge to the back.
Except the 1600. The muffler isn't clamped down on that one so it'll spin around a little bit. We leave it loose so we can pull it off to back into the shed to get out the grain drill and the corn planter.
