Micrometer measurement is by far the accepted and best way to do the task. It takes a skilled and practiced hand to do it right. each journal must be measured in about 6 or 8 places in several directions across, and around to assure the accurate reading. Rod clearance is normally .0015" to .0025" Less is better (toward .0015") If you are a newbe at the measuring thing, get pro help. Bearings are called undersized to fit smaller shafts, the shells are thicker. JimN
