My dad was something of a gun nut. He had an H&H 375 magnum (elephant gun) which he talked me into shooting. The shell is about the size of a man's finger. I weighed about 120. He kept telling me it didn't kick much. So we went out to where he did his target shooting. It was so heavy, I had to prop it up which should have told me I had no business shooting that rifle. To his great delight, I squeezed off a round. It went completely through a steel I beam. He said, see it doesn't kick much and went to look at the beam. I somehow managed not to cry. My shoulder hurt so bad it felt like someone had hit me with a sledge hammer. If my life had depended on a second shot, I would not be here today. I could barely move my right arm, much less chamber and fire another round. He asked if I wanted to shoot it again and I politely declined. Once was more than enough.
