You are not obligated to buy it. Obviously there was a discrepancy between the two parties, but there was never a verbal or written agreement that you would purchase the gaskets. It is just a matter of is he expecting you to buy (as in he cant return it) and do you want to burn a bridge with him? If it were me I would say dont buy.
