Probably not related - but my JD 4840 was doing the same thing.
After weeks of messing around, the JD mechanic tore the rear end apart and found some linkage arm on a control rod had sheared a roll pin/bolt in there.
I didn't see it, but he said it might have come from a large sideways force on the three point - considering we'd been planting wheat with a 3 pt mount 27' Great Plains drill (which would lift the front end off the ground when full), I could well believe him we might have slammed it sideways a little too hard on a turn...
