I agree with you 100% on sanding/filing the points being a waste of time and a GREAT cause of aggravation when the points screw up again.
However, if they are only oxidized a bit, and NOT burned, they will clean up nicely by drawing a clean piece of cardstock through them a few times to burnish them, followed by a spray of electrical ontact cleaner to remove the residue.
