Actually, the 3L is a pretty good little engine. Good power for what it is and such. It's just not good on gas. You were fortunate if you got that kind of mileage from a 2.9. I've simply never heard anyone around here tell of good mileage from a 4x4 Ranger. Somewhat better from the 2WD's... but not the the 4x4. Doesn't matter if it's a 2.3, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0 or 4.0. They all suck. This 3L is really very close to the same as the old 2.3 was in the '92 we had before except that the 3L has a little more giddyup... but not much.
