I found this very very interesting......
I go onto a site called coinflation.com every once in a while.
They will list what the melt value of different coins are, such as the 1909-1982 cent, and the 1983-2008 cent, and others.
Well, they also list the melt value of the old silver coins, the mercury dime, the 1932-64 quarter etc. I did a little calculation. today silver is approx $20.64 oz, the mercury dime is worth (in silver) $1.49, so with 2.2 dimes, you could buy, today, a gallon of reg gasoline @ $3.40 a gallon!
So, what do you think? Maybe gasoline isn't getting expensive, maybe our dollar is just losing.
Thought I'd post this to hear from y'all who remember buying gas with these coins!
P.S. Do you happen to have seen a show for kids called "shining time station"? Well the character called Skeamer, was always looking to get a nickel, not dimes, dollars, or cents. Nickels. well.... he might have been on to something...... Today's nickel (1946-2008) is worth $0.07 cents!
