I have a 2000 Dakota crew cab with 4.7, 4wd 5 spd manual and 355 gear ratio. Makes 16-18 short chase around trips, 20 on long trips. On a couple of seed runs, with a 1 ton pallet of seed in the box, where I had to follow a seed truck that never exceeded 55 mph, it did 24 mpg. It seems that the low speed helped a lot more than the 1 ton load hurt. Makes me wonder if it would benifit from a gear change from 3.55 up to about 3.00. I think that higher rear gears would help the manual trans gear spread too. With 3.55's, starting in 1st is too low geared, and starting in 2nd is a bit tall if starting up hill.
